Generation No. 1
1. HAUTE1 WYATT1,2,3,4,5,6 was born Bet. 1594-1596 in Boxley, Kent, England, and died July 31, 1638 in Boxley, Kent, England. He married (1) BARBARA ELIZABETH MITFORD7 February 6, 1617/18. He married (2) ANN COX8 Aft. 1626.
Notes for HAUTE WYATT:
Haute/Hawte Wyatt, was born 1594 in Boxley, Kent County, England. One source say he was born June 4, 1594 and other sources say 1596. He matriculated at Queens College, Oxford, Oct 25, 1611, aged 17, and was a student at Grays Inn. He was later ordained a Priest in the Church of England. At a Court held in London for Virginia, July 16, 1621, "Sir Francis Wyatt's brother beinge a M[aste]r of Arts and a good divine and very willinge to goe wth him this present Voyadge, migant be entertayned and placed as Mynister over his people and have ye same allowance towards the furnishings of himself wth the necessaries as others have hadd, and that his wife might have her transporte freed, wch motion was thought verie reasonable..." Haute Wyatt and Francis Wyatt, who had been appointed governor, arrived Oct./Nov. 1621 at the James River with a fleet of 9 ships, on board the George. "Hant Wyatt, Minister" was living in James City on Feb. 16, 1623/4, but does not appear in the muster of January 1624/5. He had returned to England by that date. Haute Wyatt married February 6, 1618, to Barbara Elizbeth Mitford by whom he had two sons, George and Edward. It appears that the wife did not go to Virginia with him as she does not appear in any Virginia records. After returning to England, another son Thomas was born in 1626 and died in April 1627 at Boxley. Barbara Elizabeth died Oct 31, 1626, a few weeks after the birth of her son. Haute then married Ann, whose surname was said to be Cox [or Cocke], daughter of John and Ann (Lee) Cox. A son John born in 1630 and a daughter Anne was born before the second wife's death in February 1631. Rev. Haute Wyatt became minister of Marston Chapel in 1629 and became Vicar of Boxley in 1632 where he served until his death on July 31, 1638. He was buried in the Chancel of Boxley Church on August 1. His mother Lady Jane Finch Wyatt was living with him and caring for his children. He left no will and she appeared in the Archdeaconry Court of Canterbury, Oct. 26, 1638, and petitioned for administration of the estate of her son, "Mr. Haute Wyatt, late Vicar of Boxley in Kent." In the reports of administration, filed April 29, 1639, by Lady Jane, rent due to Sir Francis Wyatt of Boxley was listed and also money paid out in behalf of Haute Wyatt's children namely, "George, aged 19; Edward, aged 17; John, aged 10; and Anne aged 7." In the church at Boxley there is a memorial erected in 1702 by Edwin Wyatt in memory of several members of his family. The epitaph includes the following: "George Wiat left also Hawt Wiat who died vicar of this parish, and hath issue liveing in Virginia." Much of the material in the above Notes is from Annie Lash Jester, comp. and ed., Adventurers of Purse and Person Virginia 1607-1625 (1964), 718-720.

v. ANNE WYATT14, b. February 1631/32.
Generation No. 2
2. JOHN2 WYATT I (HAUTE1)15,16,17 was born 1630 in Boxley, Kent, England, and died Aft. 1666 in Virginia. He married (1) MARY COCKE Abt. 1650. He married (2) JANE OSBORNE18 Abt. 1653, daughter of THOMAS OSBORNE.
Notes for JOHN WYATT I:
John Wyatt I, the son of Rev. Haute Wyatt and his 2nd wife Anne Cox, was cared for by his grandmother Lady Jane Finch Wyatt, as his mother had died in 1631. He came to America as a young man and was claimed as a headright by Colonel Thomas Pettus in 1652. Pettus received 1,000 acres in Westmoreland County,Virginia, in a patent dated Feb. 10, 1652, for transporting 20 persons, including John Wyatt. See Nell Marion Nugent, Cavaliers and Pioneers, Vol. 1, p. 389. John Wyatt I was twice married. Around 1650 he married Mary Cocke and had sons Edmund and William. After Mary's death John married Jane Osborne and had by her a son John and daughter Anne. John Wyatt I was mentioned in the will of his cousin Eleanor Wyatt, (1624-1649), the only child of Haute Wyatt's brother Henry. She died in 1649 in England and left a bequest of 40 pounds to John and 50 pounds to his sister Anne. See "Virginia Gleanings in England," Virginia Historical Magazine 31 (1923), 239. Anne later came to Virginia and was among the headrights claimed by John Ashley in 1653. There is a family tradition that John Wyatt I, known as Capt. John Wyatt, was a sea captain and ran a line of merchant ships between England and Barbados. "Possibly Rev. Haute's son John was the Capt. John Wyatt, of York, 1646-65, at whose house in 1655 Maj. William Wyatt and others witnessed 'an acknowledgment by the protector of the young king of the Chicksoyacks to Edward Wyatt.'" See P. Stacy, "Major William Wyatt of St. Stephen's," Tyler's Quarterly Magazine 26 (October 1944), 119.
Notes for JANE OSBORNE:
Jane Osborne was the daughter of Captain Thomas Osborne who had come to Virginia about 1611.
Children of JOHN WYATT and MARY COCKE are:
i. EDMUND3 WYATT, b. 1651.
ii. WILLIAM WYATT, b. 1652; d. Abt. 1686; m. REBEKAH KENT.
Children of JOHN WYATT and JANE OSBORNE are:
3. iii. JOHN3 WYATT II, b. 1655, Virginia; d. Abt. 1714, Virginia.
iv. ANNE WYATT, b. 1657.
Generation No. 3
3. JOHN3 WYATT II (JOHN2, HAUTE1)19 was born Abt. 1655 in Virginia, and died Abt. 1714 in Virginia. He married UNKNOWN20 1675.
Notes for JOHN WYATT II:
The identity of John Wyatt II, son of John and Jane (Osborne) Wyatt, has been a source of some confusion. A number of secondary sources allege that this John Wyatt II was the same John Wyatt who married Ann Jones, daughter of Rice Jones. See Leonardo Andrea, The Wyatt Family, paper read "Last Sunday in August 1942, Fairfield Church near Easley, SC," at an annual reunion of the SC Wyatt family; Descendants of Francis and Haute Wyatt, 4 (which gives Ann's maiden name as James); and Francis Sample Franklin, The Ancestry of Frances Sample Franklin (Wolfe City, TX, 1972), 88-90. This error has been repeated all over the internet and can be found at a well-known Wyatt web site: http://www.wyatt.family.tree.mcmail.com. Interestingly, an article entitled "Wyatt Families," which appeared in 1901 in the William and Mary Quarterly, series 1, p. 260, shows the John Wyatt who married Ann Jones as the son of Major William Wyatt. P. Stacy's article "Major William Wyatt of St. Stephen's," Tyler's Quarterly Magazine 26 (October 1944) 118-121, also confirms that the John Wyatt who married Ann Jones was a son of Major William Wyatt. Finally, the exhaustive and well-documented book by Michal Martin Farmer, The Genealogy of the Webster, Martin, Dozier Staples, & Starke Families of Wilkes Co., GA. Their Ancestors, Descendants, & Kin Braswell, Wyatt, and Martin (Wolfe City, TX, 1994), 619-640, clearly establishes that Major William Wyatt (ca. 1627-ca.1693) was the father of the John Wyatt who married Ann Jones. Genealogist Kyle S. VanLandingham has worked diligently at the Wyatt Genforum Message Board and at the Wyatt Rootsweb Mailing List to debunk the myth that the John Wyatt who married Ann Jones was the son of John and grandson of Haute Wyatt.
A careful study of the early Virginia land patents in Nugent's Cavaliers and Pioneers and an examination of Virginia Tax Records (Baltimore, 1983); Virginia Land Records (Baltimore, 1982); Virginia Marriage Records (Baltimore, 1984); Virginia Military Records (Baltimore, 1983); Dorothy Ford Wulfeck, Marriages of Some Virginia Residents, 2 vols. (Baltimore, 1986); Clayton Torence, comp., Virginia Wills and Administrations 1632-1800 (Baltimore, 1985) and other published sources leads to the conclusion, by process of elimination and a preponderance of the evidence, that John Wyatt II, son of John and Jane (Osborne) Wyatt, was the identical John Wyatt who died prior to 1715 and whose widow married William Cording of Bath County, North Carolina. John Wyatt's estate was managed by his widow's second husband, William Cording, and confirms that his daughter Ann Wyatt was in 1715, the wife of John Stafford I. See Beaufort County, NC, Real Estate Record Book I, pp. 267-268.
John Wyatt received a patent for 80 acres in Norfolk County, Virginia, Oct. 25, 1695, for transporting two persons. (Patent Book 9, p. 4). See Nugent, Cavaliers and Pioneers, III, 4.
Child of JOHN WYATT and UNKNOWN is:
i. ANN4 WYATT21, b. Abt. 1677; d. Bef. 1733, North Carolina; m. JOHN STAFFORD I22,23, 1692.
Generation No. 4
4. ANN4 WYATT (JOHN3, JOHN2, HAUTE1)21 was born Abt. 1677, and died Bef. 1736 in North Carolina. She married JOHN STAFFORD I22 1692. He was born 1669 in York County, Virginia, and died 1736 in Bath [Beaufort] County, North Carolina23.
Notes for ANN WYATT:
Ann Wyatt was born about 1677 in York County Virginia, the daughter of John and Unknown Wyatt. She married about 1692, John Stafford. In 1715 Ann and John were living in Beaufort Precinct of Bath County, North Carolina, as shown by the following: Record Book 1 (Real Estate Record I 1695-1729) page 267-268, Beaufort County, NC: "At a court held the 17th day of xber [December] anno dom 1714 Present His Majesties Justices....Granted John Stafford and Ann his wife, Daughter of John Wyat, William Cording as intermarrying the widow of the said Wyat deceased 14.8.3 appearing due for the said Ann's part, and ordered to be paid the same out of the Estate of Deceased," and "Received of William Cording, Executor of the estate of John Wyat, the sum of fourteen pounds, eight shillings, and three pence, being the full sum due to the daughter Ann of the said John Wyat in Virginia as her part of the appraisement, and by order of Court, (which said Ann Wyat is now my wife) we say received by us this 5th day of August 1715." It is signed by the marks of John Stafford and Ann Wyatt Stafford. Ann was not mentioned in her husband's will of 1733, so evidently she had died before then.
Notes for JOHN STAFFORD I:
There are a number of printed secondary sources which assert that John Stafford I, was the son of a William Stafford II and the grandson of William Stafford I. See Frances Sample Franklin, The Ancestry of Frances Sample Franklin (Wolfe City, TX, 1972); G. M. G. Stafford, General Leroy Augustus Stafford, His Forebears and Descendants (Baton Rouge, LA, 1969, reprint); Annie Elizabeth Miller, Our Family Circle (Macon, GA, 1931); and Stafford Chart, compiled by Margaret Davis Cate, Sea Island, GA, 1952. However, none of these documents provide any convincing proof that John Stafford was indeed a grandson of the above William Stafford and his putative wife, Ann Mason. Indeed, there is no consensus as to the identity of William I's wife. Acording to Frances S. Franklin, John Stafford was born in York County, Virginia, ca. 1669 and married ca. 1692, Ann Wyatt. The first three of their children were born in York Co., VA, and the last three in Bath Co. North Carolina. By 1700 the family had moved to Bath County, North Carolina in the area that later became Beaufort County. On June 7, 1727, James Welch sold to John Stafford 381 acres in Bath County on the north side of Pantigo Creek, according to Beaufort County, NC, Record Book I (Real Estate Record I 1696-1729), p 534. John Stafford's will is dated May 15, 1733, Bath Co., NC., and was probated March 13, 1736 before Jno. Collison. The son William received a plantation on the south side of Broad Creek; John received "my plantation I now dwell on" 100 acres; Joshua received 100 acres of land; Edward was willed 180 acres on Creek Swamp; and Thomas got land on the north side of Broad Creek. The daughter Dinah Stafford received a box of irons and heaters. The remainder of the estate was to be sold and proceeds equally divided among the children, except for William. John Stafford, Jr., was Executor of the will. Thomas Batters was appointed to oversee the estates of the four youngest children which raises an interesting question. The Franklin book's birthdates for the children shows that the youngest was 28 when her father's will was written. According to Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, Vol. 8, p. 324, the son Joshua was b. ca. 1725.
Children of ANN WYATT and JOHN STAFFORD are:
i. WILLIAM5 STAFFORD, b. 1693, Virginia. 5. ii. JOHN STAFFORD II, b. 1695, Virginia; d. Aft. 1768, Bulloch Co., Georgia. iii. JOSHUA STAFFORD, b. 1697, Virginia. iv. EDWARD STAFFORD, b. 1701, North Carolina. v. THOMAS STAFFORD, b. 1703, North Carolina. vi. DIANA STAFFORD, b. 1705, North Carolina. Generation No. 5 5. J
Notes for JOHN STAFFORD II:
In 1741 John Stafford and his wife Mary sold 100 acres which his father John Stafford had willed to him. This is shown in Beaufort Co., Deed Book 1, page 133. By 1745, John and his family had moved to Bladen County, in the portion that became Anson County in 1748/9. Anson County, NC, Deed Book A, page 99 reveals that on Sept. 19, 1749, John Stafford of Anson County, sold 213 acres on the south side of the Pee Dee River to William Kemp for 50 pounds proclamation money. He had earlier obtained this land in a deed of conveyance from John Read in 1745. On March 1, 1754, John Stafford bought 50 acres on the south side of the Pee Dee from William Little for 20 pounds Va money. See Anson Co. Deed Book A, p. 516. In 1760 he received from King George III a grant of 600 acres in the newly opened land of the Creek Cession along the northern border of Georgia. The grant was in St. Philip Parish in the part which later became Bulloch County. John Stafford received a grant dated June 6, 1769 for 150 acres in St. Philip Parish which had been surveyed on Sept. 5, 1767. The land was bounded on the southeast by Lambeth Lane and on the northeast by the Ogeechee River. See Plat Book C, p. 303 and Grant Book G, p. 347, as published in English Crown Grants in St. Philip Parish in Georgia, 1755-1775.
Child of JOHN STAFFORD and MARY is:
6. i. THOMAS PETER6 STAFFORD, b. 1718, Bath, North
Carolina; d. Aft. 1808, Bulloch Co., Georgia. Generation No. 6 6. T
Notes for THOMAS PETER STAFFORD:
Around 1767 Thomas Peter Stafford and family moved to Georgia into that portion of St Philip Parish which later was included in Bulloch County. On March 4, 1768, his son Joshua and daughters Anna and Dinah "all on Ogeechee River," married their spouses in a triple wedding ceremony at Ebenezer Lutheran Church. The original church building, constructed 1767-69, is still standing in Effingham County, GA., and is officially known as Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church. See C. A. Linn, ed., Ebenezer Record Book (Savannah, GA, 1929), p. 76. The Staffords later moved to Bryan County, GA, for at a "Court held at White Oak Plantation June 7, 1797," Thomas P. Stafford was one of the jurors drawn for the next court term. On Dec. 29, 1801, Thomas Peter Stafford and wife Mariah of Bryan County, sold to Felix Geiger of Bulloch County for $20; 150 acres in old St. Philip Parish, now Bulloch County, granted by King George III in June 1760 to John Stafford and left by John's will to Thomas Peter Stafford. See Bulloch County Deed Book A, p. 104. On Jan. 27, 1806, Thomas Stafford and wife Mariah sold to James Scott a tract of land in Bryan County, formerly Liberty County, according to page 6 of Caroline P. Wilson's Abstracts and Index to Court Records 1793-1828 Bryan County, Georgia, published in 1929. Thomas P. Stafford's name continues in court records through 1808. Most sources give his birthdate as around 1718/20 but considering that he would have been of very advanced age when involved in these proceedings in the early part of the 19th century, consideration should be given to the possibility that he was born a few years later. This would also apply to his children's birthdates.
Children of THOMAS STAFFORD and MARIAH are:
7. i. ANN7 STAFFORD, b. 1742, Bath County, North
Carolina. ii. JOSHUA STAFFORD30, b. 1743, North Carolina; m. MARGARET
IRONMONGER, September 1767. iii. JOHN STAFFORD31, b. 1745, North Carolina; m. SAVANNAH EVANS, May

County, Georgia. v. MARY STAFFORD32, b. 1749, North Carolina; m. ELIJAH SODLIFT,
November 23, 1773. Generation No. 7 7. A
Children of ANN STAFFORD and ISRAEL BIRD are:
i. JAMES8 BIRD, b. 1774. ii. MARY BIRD, b. 1778. iii. MARGARET BIRD, b. 1782. 8. D
Notes for DINAH STAFFORD:
Dinah Stafford was born about 1747 in Beaufort County, North Carolina. She married Sylvanus Bird, March 4, 1768, at Ebenezer Church in present Effingham County, Georgia. Sylvanus Bird was fatally wounded Jan. 27, 1780, when Indians attacked Sir James Wright's Plantation at Ogeechee and killed Bird's sister Mrs. Hearn. This item was in the July 11, 1780 issue of The Royal Gazette, published in Savannah during the British occupation during the Revolutionary War. See Bryan County, GA Deed Book D, pp. 87-88, for deed from Abraham Bird of Telfair County, Georgia, to Dinah Bulloch of Bryan County, dated Sept. 3, 1810. In that deed, Abraham Bird conveyed to his mother, Dinah, portions of two tracts, containing 100 acres on the Ogeechee River in Bryan County. The deed is significant because it lists the heirs of Sylvanus Bird: Dinah [Stafford] Bird, Abraham, Andrew and Alexander Bird.
Dinah Stafford Bird married James Bulloch of Bryan County in 1788. Dinah and James had two daughters, Abegail born about 1790 who married Silas Hilliard and Ann (or Nancy) born in 1792 who married Rev. Matthew Albritton. Evidently James Bulloch had died by 1797 as a deed from John Bandy to Diannah Bulloch was issued on March 20, 1797 in Bryan County. Since it was issued to Diannah [Dinah] alone it indicates that James Bulloch was dead by that time.
In 1809, Dinah made a deed for 100 acres in Bryan County along with her daughters Abegail Hilliard and Ann Albritton for land that had been granted James Bulloch.
Dinah Stafford Bird Bulloch died May 1816, Bulloch County, Georgia. See Georgia Reports, Volume 1 by Charlton, page 150. Reprinted in National Genealogical Society Quarterly, December 1964, Volume 52, Number 4. Also see Legal Notices, etc., from Old Georgia Newspaper files, in Georgia Genealogical Magazine, Number 30, October 1968, "Bryan County--Alexander Bird, executor of will of Mrs. Dinah Bulloch, gives notice to debtors and creditors of the estate, January 9, 1819."
Notes for JAMES BULLOCH:
James Bulloch born about 1745, married Dinah Stafford born 1747 the widow of Sylvanus Bird, who was killed in 1780. They married in 1788. James lived in Bryan County Georgia. James and Dinah had two daughters, Abigail born about 1790 who married Silas Hilliard, and Ann (or Nancy) born in 1792 in Bulloch County, who married Rev. Matthew Albritton. Evidently James Bulloch died by 1797 as a deed from John Bandy to Diannah Bulloch was issued on March 20, 1797 in Bryan County. Since it was issued to Diannah [Dinah] alone, it indicates her husband James Bulloch was dead by that time. Records in Bryan County show Mrs. Ann Albritton, her sister Mrs. Abegail Hilliard, and their mother Mrs. Dinah Bulloch made a deed to 100 acres of land that had been granted James Bulloch. The Grant dated January 13, 1796 to James Bulloch was cited in the above deed recorded in Deed Book C, 1807-1815, pages 105-107, Bryan County, Georgia. The deed was to Godhilf Smith of Bryan County for 100 acres and was dated Jan. 23, 1809 It also identifies Dinah as the "relict" or widow of James Bulloch.
Children of DINAH STAFFORD and SYLVANUS BIRD are:
i. DINAH8 BIRD, b. Dec. 17, 1768; m. William Byron. ii. ABRAHAM BIRD, b. Jan. 1, 1771; d. Aug. 28, 1828; m. 1st Jane C. Barnes; 2nd Sarah

Notes for ABEGAIL BULLOCH:
Abegail Bulloch was born about 1785/90 in Georgia, the daughter of James and Dinah Stafford Bird Bulloch. She married Silas Hilliard and died at their home near Waresboro about 1855 at about age 70. Mr. Hilliard died in 1861 and they are buried in unmarked graves at the Kettle Creek Church.

Notes for SILAS HILLIARD:
There were two Silas Hilliards in Georgia at the same time(1800-1830). Silas Hilliard, the subject, was on the 1820 census for Tattnall County. He was on the 1830,1840, 1850 & 1860 census for Ware County.
The other Silas Hillard (note difference in spelling) signed a deed Screven Co., Ga in 1807 and his wife is shown as Delilah Hillard. This Silas appears on the 1820 census for Bulloch County, Georgia, and on the 1830 census in Decatur County, Georgia.
The 1850 and 1860 census returns state that Silas Hilliard was born in North Carolina about 1770. Silas Hilliard was a tax-defaulter in Burke County in 1793, according to a list of defaulters for that year published in an Augusta newspaper. He married circa 1796, wife's name unknown and had one daughter, Nancy. He later married Abegail Bulloch, daughter of James and Dinah Bulloch. Records of Chatham County, Georgia show Marriages, No 37, Silas Hilliard and Abigail Bulloch; date of license is July 7, 1806. No marriage date or return of license is shown. Silas lived successively in Burke, Bryan,
Bulloch, Tattnall and Bulloch Counties before moving to Ware county in 1827. On Nov. 12, 1827, Silas Hilliard purchased half of Lot 157, District 8, Ware County, from Abner Jones. He sold the property to his son-in-law, William R. Wilkinson, Aug. 30, 1848. On Jan. 21, 1840, Silas bought Lot 156, District 8, from John Newborn and sold it to David Cason for $150 on March. 29, 1841. See Laura Singleton Walker, History of Ware County Georgia (Macon, GA, 1934), pp. 27-30. Silas Hilliard served in the Second Seminole War in the company commanded by Capt. James A Sweat from June 9 until August 19, 1838. Abegail died at their home near Waresboro about 1855 aged about 70 years. After her death Silas lived with his grandson, Capt. Cuyler W. Hilliard, until his death in 1861. He and his wife were buried in the cemetery at Kettle Creek Church, with their graves unmarked.

Notes for MATTHEW ALBRITTON:
Matthew Albritton was one of the first Baptist ministers to come to the Wiregrass area of south Georgia. He was born about 1785 in Effingham County, the son of John Albritton, a Revolutionary soldier, and Averilla Atherton Albritton. His elder brother was Thomas Albritton born 1776. He grew up in Bulloch County and met and married Ann Bulloch, the daughter of James and Dinah Bulloch. She was born in Bulloch County in 1792 and they were married about 1805. Rev. Albritton and his wife lived in Bulloch, Bryan, Laurens, Irwin counties. He became a Justice of the Inferior Court of Lowndes County and served in 1826-27. He served many Baptist churches in the area and was a member of Union Church in Lowndes County at his death in 1850. He is buried at Bethany Church in present day Brooks County. Ann Albritton was a member of Bethany Church. She lived with her daughter Sophronia, in Madison County, Florida, but later moved back to Brooks County and lived with her daughter and son in law, Martha Ellen and John W Allen until she died. Ann Albritton died in 1871 and is buried on the old John W Allen place one mile east of Dixie.

Notes for THOMAS HILLIARD:
Thomas Hilliard born Bryan County, Georgia June 5, 1805 had a son Cuyler W Hilliard born 1825 and a daughter Frances Hilliard born 1829/30. Their mother was Delilah Wilkinson born 1808, never married. She had seven children, five of whom went by the Wilkinson name and two by the Hilliard name. While Annie Willingham was visiting her daughter, Ellen Parker in Bassinger, Florida, she died on April 24, 1901. She is buried in the Bassinger Cemetery.
Notes for WILLIAM HENRY WILLINGHAM:
William Henry Willingham was born April 18, 1816. According to family tradition he was born in Scotland and was kidnapped at the age of seven years and bought to America. In Annie (Hilliard) Willingham's widow's pension application for William H. Willingham's Seminole Indian War service she stated that he was born in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. He was married to to Annie Hilliard, daughter of Silas and Abegail Bulloch Hilliard. Annie Hilliard was born near Waycross, Georgia, March 19, 1815.
He served four enlistments in the Indian War, all in Ware County Militia Companies; Private in Capt. David J Miller's company, June 9th to August 19, 1838; 1st Corporal in Captain David J Miller's company, August 19th to November 18, 1840, private under same Captain, November 19th to June 1st, 1840 and again October 9th to December 3, 1841.
William Willingham and his family were in Florida by 1845. he voted in the state's first election, May 26, 1845, in Columbia County, at Barbers Precinct, south prong of St Mary's River. Also voting in the same precinct was his Half-brother-in-law, Joseph Underhill. This is referenced in FLORIDA VOTERS IN THEIR FIRST STATEWIDE ELECTION, by Brian Michaels, page 36.
In 1848 they moved to Hillsborough County. Florida settling about twenty five miles east of Tampa, where he is shown on the 1850 census. He served in the company commanded by Captain L G Lesley in the Third Seminole War, in 1855-1858 in Florida. He traded his cattle and land to Melton Johnson for land and cattle on Chloroform Branch, in Kissimmee Island. He later gave the land and cattle to his son William and moved back to Ft. Mead, settling on 160 acres lying southwest of Ft. Meade on the east side of the Peace River. Tax statements for 1862 state that W H Willingham owned 1,550 head of cattle. At one time the Willingham's had over 10,000 head of cattle, the largest at that time the in Florida.
He built a two story house on his homestead. It was a hand-pegged structure, painted white, it had gingerbread printing on the veranda. In the front room was a fireplace, built of limestone block Willian had cut from the banks of Peace River. During the 1880's William owned large orange groves and operated a ferry across the river at Fort Meade.
When he was an old man he fell off a wagon and broke his leg. His health declined gradually and he died on February, 1886. He is buried in Plesant Grove Cemetery in Fort Meade.
William Willingham died intestate. His estate records are in File 88, Polk County Probate Records. Annie Willingham died April 24, 1901 at Bassinger, Florida and is buried there.

January 25, 1842. He came with his parents to Columbia County before 1845. They move by
1848 to Hillsborough County. William W Willingham served as a private in Company K, 8th
Florida Infantry, CSA, enlisting at Fort Brooke on May 27, 1862. He was wounded at
Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 by a lead ball in the left foot and was captured. He was
paroled at Baltimore on September 25, 1863 and allowed to return home on furlough. At the expiration of the furlough he enlisted in Captain F A Hendry's Company at Fort
Meade. During the later service he was wounded by a lead ball in the right foot. He was declared
incapacitated for duty and returned home. He married Ann E Starling on July 25, 1866 in Polk County. In the
late 1860's Bill's father gave his land at Kissimmee Island to Bill and moved to Fort
Meade. by 1877 Bill Willingham was worth an estimated $50,000. On September 4, 1880 Bill attempted to cross the Peace
River on a ferry owned by his father. He could not find the ferryman, his brother-in-law William
McLaughlin. While attempting to cross the river and falling into the water he got into a
fight with McLaughlin. Bill shot William McLaughlin who later died on September 12, 1880. Bill Willingham returned to
Kissimmee Island and evaded capture by hiding in the swamps for several years. He was
captured in 1884 and went on trial in July 1884. He was convicted of first degree murder with a
recommendation of mercy. He was sentenced to life imprisonment at hard labor in the state
penitentiary. Ann Willingham sold to Ziba King a large stock of cattle and other personal
property owned by Bill on May 5, 1886. Bill contested the sale but lost. They were
subsequently divorced on November 16, 1893. Bill engaged prominent attorneys to appeal his
conviction but the efforts were in vain. He then sought a pardon. In April 1898 Thomas L
Wilson of Wilson & Wilson went to Tallahassee and presented petitions for his pardon
signed by more than 1,000 citizens. He was formally pardoned on May 23, 1898. With all his
assets gone he retired to a small place on Kissimmee Island. A few friends gave him a small stock to
begin again. In November 1909 his assets included three horses and seventy-five cattle valued at $700.
He applied for a Confederate pension from his service in Captain Hendry's Company due to
being permanently disabled for wounds received in service. His claim was approved on
December 23, 1908 with pay from June 4, 1908 at the rate of $120 per annum. He reapplied
under the Act of 1909 on November 3, 1909. On March 8, 1910 the Board of Pensions
repudiated his claim as a War Department record showed he was last reported on the rolls
of Company K as absent without leave since October 31, 1863, ignoring his later proven
service in Captain Hendry's Company. So the twice wounded veteran was denied his pension.
William W Willingham died June 6, 1910. He was buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in
Fort Meade. Notes for ANN E STARLING: Ann E Starling was the daughter of Lucretia Virginia Kirkland and step-daughter of
Isham Lewis. 22. iii. SERENA WILLINGHAM, b. April 14, 1844, Waycross, Georgia; d. July 12, 1926, Ft

Notes for HENRY HUDSON HANCOCK:
Henry Hudson Hancock was born in Fort Meade, Florida January 30, 1868. He married Martha Jane Sturgis on January 30, 1889 . Martha Jane Sturgis was born June 30, 1870 and died in 1962 in Okeechobee, Florida. Henry Hancock attended school at the old Bartow institutes. He later taught school at Fort Meade and Avon Park. Henry Hancock and his brother, James T Hancock, Jr. were sent by the Federal government to the Lake Okeechobee region to resurvey an area that had previously been
incorrectly surveyed after the turn of the century. Henry liked the area of Taylor Creek and decided it
would be a good place to live. He returned to Polk County and brought his herd of 106 cattle. He constructed a log house and returned to Polk County for his family. They left Fort Meade in 1902 and traveled five days to arrive at Taylor Creek. They settled on the east side of the creek. Henry was
instrumental in securing the area's first voting precinct in 1903. Henry Hancock was appointed Justice of the Peace for lower Brevard County and later served in that capacity when part of the county was made into St Lucie County. In 1909 he had a boat constructed by Sam Gray to transport oranges to Fort Myers. It was fifty two feet long and named the Serena Victoria for his mother. When a new frame school was built in 1909 Henry Hancock along with Pter Raulerson, Weyman Potter and the teacher, Dr. Hubbard were the trustees for the 1909-10 term. When Okeechobee county was formed in 1917 Henry Hancock was made County Judge. He later served as Superintendent of Public Instruction. Mr. Hancock devoted a large part of his life to public service. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Henry Hancock died January 12, 1950 at Okeechobee. His wife Martha Jane Sturgis died in 1962. They are buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Okeechobee, Florida.
