Jannie Rozema via email corrected the spelling of Frieseman and noted that the three children listed belong to her and not the first wife. This is rememebered in the book of her granddaughter Henriette Mariette Augustine Hertzsprung-Kapteyn. The 1880 New York census soundex listed a Kalshoven family just like this one---except the father was named Adam(see explanation below) and he was listed as born in Germany. The dates are all the same. The children's names are the same.
listed as a fresco painter
the 1880 New York Census. The Soundex code for Kalshoven is K421. I found only one Kalshoven Family. The card listed the following information.
Vol 05, ED 644, Sheet 18, Line 26
Kalshoven Adam white Male 44 Born Germany
New York, New York First Avenue House 2306
Kalshoven Lydia wife 42 Amsterdam
Kalshoven Edward son 13 New Jersey
Kalshoven William son 10 New Jersey
Kalshoven Lydia daughter 7 New York
Kalshoven James son 3 New York
This was the only Kalshoven family listed in New York for 1880 in the soundex listing.
There was no Kalshoven listed in the index for the 1850 New York census
The marriage info. was provided by Paula Ludwig over the phone.
His naturalization papers list that he was made a citizen Oct 16, 1880 at the U. S. District court of New York, N.Y.; that his address was 2306 1st. Avenue, N.Y. City; he was a painter and had a former nationality of Dutch. His name was listed as Edward C. Kalshoven.
Since the address of the above naturalization and the 1880 census are the same, the confusion about the name Adam and place of birth Germany should be seen as an error.

Notes for JOHANNES CHRISTIAAN KALSHOVEN:
From Brian Kalshoven via email 2003 with an accompanying photo
The tall thin gent is my great-grandfather, Johannes Christiaan. He was a tea merchant with a business in London, from whence he traveled to Europe, (Holland in particular, but also Belgium), buying tea. His office was in Rood Lane, not far from the Tower of London. Although a newish office block stands there, there are still a number of tea merchants in the building. I have been told by a person in the business that that building is to be torn down and another built on the site. He and his family lived to the South of London, most of the time in Norwood and Streatham.
Children of JOHANNES KALSHOVEN and ELIZABETH SYMS are:
12. i. ERNEST CHRISTIAN4 KALSHOVEN, b. August 3, 1873, London; d. March 31, 1957, Bulawayo, Rhodisa (Zimbabwe).

8. CATHARINA ELISABETH3 KALSHOVEN (JACOBUS WILHELMUS2, WILLIAM1) was born June 19, 1851. She married JACOBUS CORNELIUS KAPTEYN. He was born January 19, 1851 in Barneveld, Netherlands, and died June 18, 1922 in Amsterdam.
Notes for JACOBUS CORNELIUS KAPTEYN:
Jacobus Kapteiijn (aka Kapteyn) was a professor of astronomy at Groningen University, and his picture hangs there in the gallery of greats.
This information and most of the information on the kalshoven family in Holland and Africa was provided by Barbara Kalshoven, wife of John Napier Kapshoven.
The following is from the 1997 Encyclopedia Brytannica
Kapteyn, Jacobus Cornelius (b. Jan. 19, 1851, Barneveld, Neth.--d. June 18, 1922, Amsterdam), Dutch astronomer who used photography and statistical methods in determining the motions and distribution of stars.
Kapteyn attended the State University of Utrecht and in 1875 became a member of the staff of Leiden Observatory. In 1877 he was elected to the chair of astronomy and theoretical mechanics at the State University of Groningen.
Kapteyn was not the first to use photographic methods in astronomy, but his breadth of scientific vision and capacity for carrying through large programs made him a key figure in the development of photographic astronomy. Using measurements of the positions of star images on photographic plates made at the Cape of Good Hope by Sir David Gill, Kapteyn compiled the Cape Photographic Durchmusterung, (1896-1900; Cape Photographic Examination), a catalog of roughly 454,000 southern stars. He devised a sampling system in which the thorough counting of stars in small, selected areas gave an indication of the structure of the Milky Way Galaxy. While recording the motions of many stars, he discovered the phenomenon of star streaming--i.e., that the peculiar motions (motions of individual stars relative to the mean motions of their neighbors) of stars are not random but are grouped around two opposite, preferred directions in space. Many later investigations of the distances and spatial arrangement of the stars of the Milky Way Galaxy stemmed from his work.
Children of CATHARINA KALSHOVEN and JACOBUS KAPTEYN are:
13. i. GERRIT4 KAPTEYN, b. December 4, 1883, Groningen; d. December 25, 1937, Switzerland.

He married AMIE JULIA KOPER September 28, 1910 in New Orleans, Louisiana, daughter of JOHN KOPER and HENRIETTA HEIDMANN. She was born July 5, 1891 in New Orleans, La, and died October 10, 1931 in Baton Rouge, LA.
Notes for JAMES E. KALSHOVEN:
father's age from James E., Jr.’s birth certificate matches this date from the 1880 New York census soundex.
James E. Kalshoven's son James E. Jr, wrote to Barbara Kalshoven in South Africa in 1982 that his father was born March 7, 1880 (which does not match the New York census information or the information on James E. Jr's birth certificate in New Orleans). He also said the he died in 1948 in New Orleans.
Notes for AMIE JULIA KOPER:
Her name is listed as Annie Julia in the marriage record a Louisiana Vital Records from Ancestory.com
1910 Soundex for New Orleans listed a Koeper family headed by the mother Etta H. Koeper, age 45 b. Louisiana. There were 5 children--one a daughter Annie age 20 born in Louisiana. A perfect fit for Amie.

Based on what Estelle Kalshoven says below this has to be the family.
On 4/12/94, Estelle Leggio Kalshoven said that Inez married a Kotter and had a child Jimmy [James Ivy Kotter, b. Sept. 25, 1925 according to his daughter JoAnn Kotter Lopes in an email on 7/8/2001] and another son. She also had sisters named Helen and Hazel [Hazel married Chick Taylor and had no children. She worked for New Orleans Public Service. Source: an email form JoAnn Kotter Lopes on 7/8/2001].
.
From the Marriage records on CD at the Tampa library I already have that on 4/22/1885 John C. Koper married Henrietta Virginia Heidemann.
Note also from the Automated Archives CD1 of Louisiana marriages 1739-1924 we have a Henrietta Heidemann marrying John C. Koper on April 22, 1885. [The C. stands for Caesar.]
James E. Kalshoven, Jr., her son wrote to Barbara Kalshoven of South Africa in 1982 [since moved to New Zealand] that his mother was named Amie Julia Koper and she was born July 5, 1891 and that she died in 1930 in Baton Rouge. This is contradicted by her death certificate that says she was born July 5, 1892 and that she died October 10, 1931 in Baton Rouge at age 39 and was the assistant secretary for Governor Long.
Family Tree Maker online lists a John C. Koper as being in the 1900 Census of Louisiana.

The man with the handle-bar moustache is my Grandfather, Ernest Christian, (note the Anglicisation of the name). He was brought up an Englishman and went to Framlingham College, in the East of England. He tried the tea business and didn't like it and went off to join the British Army. He was quite a shorty, only about 5' 7". He was sent to India, where he became an N.C.O., before being posted to South Africa. After leaving the army, he joined the Z.A.R.P. Among some other duties, he was in charge of the control of some of the diamond-rushes, when the diamond fields were being opened up.
